SXF 468

Current Owner: Private UK
Previous Owner(s): T.Cook; Ryan Roberts, Ashford, Kent

SXF468

Advertised on eBay, February 2015. The seller (Sheffield area) said:
This is a restoration project for some one as I have no time due to a new job. Chassis is rotten and needs a lot of work but is repairable, or fit new. Bulkhead is repaireable and all panels are not too bad — it is 95% there.
It still has the correct 2litre engine and box, but the seller hadn't had it running, and didn't know if it turns over.

SXF468

After 20 bids, the vehicle sold for £2,500 to Ryan Roberts of Ashford, Kent.

As Ryan got to work on restoring 468, he posted many pictures of the work in progress on the LRSOC Forum:

In April 2015 Ryan sold the car because he realised that restoring it was a step too far for him. A week later it appeared on carandclassic.co.uk. I am quoting the advert with the spelling and punctuation as it appeared:

Series 1 88" Ex Civil Defense Reconisence For Sale (1958)

SXF468

Here we have for sale a complete Series 1 1958 88" Land rover. As you can see it need a complete restoration job on it from ground up. Its early life was in the civil defense. It will make a very sort after car when done. The chassis and bulkhead in my opinion would need to be replaced but with competent welding skills you may salvage them.I am told that a lot of the parts of the early series 2 will fit this model as it it the last of the series 1 built so you will find that these parts are a third of the price and are more readily available. The wings have been off and only loosely fastened at the moment. I have only just got the land rover but due to unforeseen circumstances i will have to part with it. This will be very rewarding to the right person. It has the correct 2L engine which i was told had been running but i can not verify that.I have the V5 in my name ready to transfer. The number plate alone has a value but really needs to remain with the car.You will find that these cars will only go up in price due to lack of availability no matter what the condition is. THIS WILL ONLY BE FOR SALE FOR ONE WEEK ONLY AND THEN PUT INTO STORAGE AFTER THAT THEN I WILL REBUILD MY SELF on my return. Cash on collection only please, trailer will be needed or i can assist with transport.
Please note .... I HAVE HAD THE ENGINE RUNNING TODAY.....
Price: £4950 Or near offer

Ryan reports raised eyebrows at the price, being twice what he was paid for the car a week before. I appreciate that the seller also quoted this website for information about SXF vehicles in general, and 468 in particular, and discouraged splitting the registration from the car (albeit making the point that it could be!) The advertiser shows the vehicle location as 'Cleveland' — my part of the world, so I'll look out for it, fully restored(!)

Update March 2023

I'm delighted to say that this vehicle has now had a top-notch restoration at Dunsfold Land-Rover. Philip Bashall sent me these pictures (and the one at the top), but is not at liberty to divulge the owner, who is apparently a very private person. However, he is in the UK — whether in the Cleveland (North Riding of Yorkshire) area I don't know... but so far I've not seen it on the road.

[Note that SXF464-470 — not all included in this database — were unusual in that they had consecutive chassis numbers (111800963 - 00969)... but in reverse order!]
