Chris Bevis wrote (05/05):

SXF842 has spent most of its life in Wales. I have a (poor) photocopy of the original brown logbook, and every MOT since 1973 (probably when it was demobbed). The vehicle has been painted with a 4" roller, and lightly restored at huge cost, with Exmoor hood and seats, and 600 crossplies. There is an alternator with its own pulley belt mounted (on very professional brackets) on top of the Dynamo, which has been disconnected electrically but is still driven by the fanbelt in order to keep the water pump going. I've started a policy of using stainless steel nuts and bolts — not original, but you can undo them when you want to!"

Notice the little 'Tempo-type' flap on the offside wing — this houses engine controls for when using the capstan winch. Push one button and the engine turns over without starting, thus 'inching' the winch. Another switch kills the engine if you need an emergency stop. The flap is held shut with hasp taken from a petrol tank lid.

Mike Mason wrote (03/06) to say that SXF482 is ex-Cardiff (Field Cable Party). John Powell is going to restore it back to CD colours etc. John also owns a BSA Motorcycle, SXF15.

Mike wrote again (12/06) to say that John has now found the original hard top for his SXF, so it's not a Field Cable Unit, but a Reconnaissance Unit of the City of Cardiff Division. He is hoping to restore it back to a Reconnaissance unit over the next couple of years.
