Current Owner: Mike Langdon, Warwickshire
Previous Owner(s): Dave Hughson, South Whiteness, Shetland
Was advertised for sale on eBay, 19/3/06, with a £500 reserve. Seller (from Leigh, Lancashire, near Manchester) wrote:
You are bidding on a 1957 ex Civil Defence Series 1, 88", Land-Rover. Tax exempt. Loads of MOT. Rebuilt chassis, rebuilt bulkhead, complete brake overhaul, new swivel housings and hubs, 31.10.50 tyres on
Weller wheels, rebuilt axles and gearbox.
Fitted with a 200TDi out of a 90, starts first turn of key, used daily, very reliable and fast. Only needs painting to finish, which I didn't do as I was trying to get the history of the markings on the doors.
Comes with spare Range Rover diffs to improve top end speed. Brand new seats from Exmoor Trim. I also have a truck-cab top which needs tidying. The only thing needing doing, is an intercooler fitting. I am only selling as I have too many projects and not enough time to finish any.
Did not reach reserve at top bid of £1120.00. Original engine number believed to have been 111704931.
In 11/06 a new owner in the Shetlands (Dave Hughson) posted questions to the The Old Leaf Sprung Land Rover Forum requesting details and parts that might help
him to restore the vehicle to a more original state. He has since reported to me:
It's fitted with a hardtop at the moment, but there's four little holes on each side which look like it would have had a [Divisional] board across the top of the wheelarch, so I'm thinking she was originally a soft top.
I'm hoping to take her back to the soft top set up. At the moment she has a 2.25 engine fitted — depending on cost, I'm considering fitting a 2.0 engine and bringing her back to original. She's been modernised
a bit and I'm wanting to take her back to as she should be. Over all she's solid enough — needs tidying up in places and [I want to] try to find the Series 1 parts that are either missing or have been replaced with
later parts. Not going for a full back-to-factory condition restoration, just to a condition so she looks presentable and reliable to use, also that should keep the costs down!!
In March 2018, Mike Langdon emailed me to say that he is now the owner of 638.
