SXF 656

SXF656

Believed to be an ex Field Cable Party unit. Now registered USV482. Once owned by D.Morris.

Just got the history check back from DVLA for SXF656 (USV482). The interesting owner is from 1986 until 1992 — West Dorset NHS Trust, Herrison Hospital. Not quite sure what they would have wanted a 30 year old Landrover at the time to use but that must clear up the 486 number and the 'No Unauthorised Persons' sticker on door? There is no history before 1986 and registration shows 1986 as first use, so was it maybe mothballed until that time? Not sure if that happened with CD vehicles as is done with Military stockpiling. I suppose the SXF number was lost at that point and therefore is highly likely sat on a modern vehicle...

I can't give a definitive answer about 'stockpiling', but it would seem that the majority of SXF vehicles saw very limited service with the Detachment to which they were sent, before being disbanded and sold through a central location, retaining their original registrations. Why 656 was 'first registered' in 1986 is a mystery.

Jason is currently (10/13) trying to get the original registration back.

Door Sticker   Mystery Number 486
The MOS plate showing the original SXF number   Another Mystery Number
  Oil & Water guage

I'm intrigued by the supplementary panel to the left of the instrument panel — what was in the top hole, one wonders? The oil and water gauge is also non-standard, and doubtless a later fitment. Adding the oil gauge has allowed the removal of the oil pressure warning light, and moving the heater control to its place — normally that would be on the bulkhead between the heater unit and the starter button.
