SXF693

In December 2016, Mike Woodier contacted me to say:
I have SXF693 under restoration. It's never been known to the club or other registers. I've done a lot of digging with locals to find out its history and so far got to:
It was bought by The Home Office/Ministry of Supply, and based at RAF Dumfries.
[Was this is Civil Defence service, or subsequent to de-mob? — Ed] In 1958 RAF Dumfries became 'Dumfries Aerodrome' and was a storage facility and REME unit for the Ministry of Supply.

SXF693 spent most of its time doing very little in the area. After the aerodrome was sold off, the vehicle was bought by Dumfries Quarrying Company. It spent all its time trundling around until the company was sold off. The Land Rover was bought privately from the Quarrying Company by a member of staff, and has been owned by the same person in nearby Carrutherstown up to date.

Basically it's never been out of the Dumfries area until now. During it's time in REME workshops it was apparently a schooling tool for mechanics, and fitted with a 2ltr diesel whilst in their ownership. The engine is painted all red.

In June 2017, Mike sent me further pics of the completed restoration:

That same month he advertised the car for sale — included in the description was:
Immaculate Chassis, Superb 2ltr engine, axles and transmission. Interesting history, restored in 1984 and dry stored until now. Many new old stock parts fitted recently. Completely rewired, new braking system, suspension, swivel balls, lighting, tyres, canvas tilt etc.

SXF 693 was part of a batch of Home Office vehicles which role was first response after a nuclear strike on the UK during the Cold War. This particular vehicle would have been 'Field Cable Party' unit which would have laid out a new communication network for the government.

There were 37 bids, and he subsequently sold the car to a dealer on the Sussex coast for £13,000. Its ownership after that is currently unknown.
