Advertised for sale on eBay, January 2019, with an asking price of £3200:
SXF 72 - Private Cherished Number Plate , LAND ROVER - Series 1, Civil Defence
This is a much sought after registration number — One of the first Ministry of Supply numbers issued approx 1958. I have owned this for around 20 years, unsuccessfully searching for the ORIGINAL vehicle to re- unite this with. IF YOU THINK THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ISSUED NUMBER FOR YOUR LAND ROVER, please get in touch. I will then discuss it's history and how it became separated from the vehicle. IF YOU CAN PROVE IT WAS THE ORIGINAL NUMBER FROM YOUR LAND ROVER, I will reduce the price for you. This WILL considerably increase the value of a genuine SXF series vehicle.
As you might expect, there is a back-story to this. A few months earlier the current advertiser had emailed me to see if I could help trace the current owner of SXF72 (which up to that point wasn't on this database, although 71 and 73 were). Apparently it was sold in Bury, Lancashire in 1998, with its original registration, which had bumped the price up to something that the advertiser's friend couldn't afford. So the current advertiser 'bought' the number separately and put it on retention so that his friend could get the vehicle (which was re-registered). 20 years later the current advertiser would like to try to find the car and somehow get the correct number back onto it — a laudable idea in my book.
But unfortunately it would seem that he's been unable to do this, hence the wording of his advert. Clearly, if anyone reading this knows of the vehicle (which I understand still had its MOS brass plate under the bonnet with the SXF72 number on it), then please contact me and I'll set wheels in motion to contact the advertiser. Let's save this piece of history if we can.
In November 2019 I was contacted by Mark Jones, who said that he'd recently bought the retention certificate from a family member. As before, he would love to hear if the vehicle still exists, with a possible view to reuniting the car with its original number. p>[To add (or alter) information on this page, please contact me on sxf@teeafit.co.uk.]
