SXF 817

SXF817

Current Owner: For Sale by Matthew ?, Spean Bridge, Highland
Previous Owner(s): Mark Round, Halifax; Garry Kirk, Perthshire

This is probably the most-photographed SXF in the database. This picture shows the car in September 2020, but an earlier version of this page started as follows:

SXF817a

Seen 1996 by Pete Galillee in a front garden in Rochdale. Once owned by Mark Round, Halifax, W.Riding, and listed as Truck Cab.

In 2012, Garry Kirk (then South Yorkshire, now Perthshire) wrote:

I bought SXF817 over eBay from a Farmer who lives in the Halifax area. It was already fitted with the current hard top so have no info on that other than what's already there as well as other minor modifications. I've owned it for around 18 months now — my eldest son did restoration work to MOT standard for me.

There is a plate covering a largish hole around 25cm in the nearside front wing, The bulk head top has what looks like a piece of box section placed there to repair the top — not original but for the time being will have to do! I am somewhat of a perfectionist and a History geek — I have been looking at Google images and am keen to have it as authentic as possible now. I want to re-instate the Civil Defence wordage and emblem, but I have to say finding anyone who does the decals to stick on rather than have it expensively sign written is like trying to find a copy of the book 'The Green Machine'!

I have a photo copy of an extract from registration document for SXF 817 showing it to be a crown vehicle, the body type is Truck Det Hood crossed out and shown by its side as 54. I also have a letter from the DVLA telling me that it was first registered in Torbay on the 15th Feb 1957.

This is the first time I've come across 'Truck Det(achable?) Hood' as the official description of what we usually call 'Soft-Top'. What the significance of the '54' is, I don't know.

Garry also sent a number of pictures showing 'Wallace' in the process of being restored. Rivet-counting LR enthusiasts can play 'Spot The Alteration'!

My two-pennoth — the windows in the body sides are larger than you'd expect for an Export Hard-top, so I guess it's not a Home Office original, but a normal UK solid hard-top with windows added later. And the pendant pedals and hydraulic clutch are from a Land-Rover later than Series 1. But that doesn't take away from an SXF, still going strong on the road.

Update, September 2020

Offered for sale on Gumtree, located in Spean Bridge, Highland. Now with a soft top, and no 'Wallace'. It looks as though Garry didn't manage to get CD livery applied.
