Current Owner: Colin Cushley, County Down, Northern Ireland
Previous Owner(s): John Wearing, Blackburn; John Powell, Dorset; Graham Thomas, Clitheroe, Lancs
Original notification to this website recorded the vehicle to John Wearing, Blackburn.
For sale on eBay 5/11. Description included:
Hardtop 88" model, was originally a petrol but now a 2 1/4 diesel. It runs and drives but has no brakes at all therefore will need to be taken away on a trailer. Condition-wise it needs a full restoration. Chassis is repairable, bulkhead very poor, engine runs good, gearbox is OK. Springs and steering will need a complete overhaul. No current MOT, last on the road in 2000, barn stored since then.
Will make a good summer restoration project for a keen enthusiast.
In June 2012 I was contacted by Andy Bury, who sent the photos below, and said:
SXF 842 was aquired by Bartram Landrovers, Accrington, Lancashire some time back (barn find recovery). It came fitted with a 21/4 diesel engine. With a short tow (and a sniff of the usual) it started and ran/drove. It became obvious that breaking it for spares would be a sad end so it was advertised for sale. After standing a couple of years in the yard there were no takers and a customer needed an engine. The unit was removed and sold. A further amount of time pased [with it] standing in the yard, until a hardy soul with a passion for restoring it came and took it. It is currently now under new local ownership and I will try to keep updates on progress.
In November 2012, Graham Thomas told me he'd become the new owner.
Graham has sent a couple of pics to show his restoration under way.
The vehicle is now in the catalogue for the next auction sale at Matthewson's of Thornton Dale, Pickering. The page details are in Matthewson's online catalogue, along with a big selection of detailed photos of the present condition — too many to include here, but certainly a long way from that at the top of this page..
Brief details are:
Current V5 present. Paperwork includes a small photo album showing the restoration of the vehicle and a British Heritage Trust Certified Copy of a Factory Record. The vendor has provided the following:
Petrol Series III engine fitted about 2 years ago (DVLA information still shows Diesel). Spare wheels in back. New carb in front.
It sold for £8300.
Paul Burnett alerted me to the fact that the vehicle was offered again in the December 23 auction. This time it sold for £7,500... still, I suspect, a very low price for what looks from the photos to be a well-restored vehicle.
In an email, Colin Cushley has brought me up to date with the news that 842 now lives in Co.Down, N.Ireland (and seems to be set up for sunny weather!) He wrote that the car needs a bit of work but I imagine it will remain in the family as we are enthusiasts. From the picture, he's certainly got a great starting point. |
