The 'Go For It!' series was commissioned by Teesside Tertiary College, in conjunction with the 5 Community Economic Development Areas of Middlesbrough, the University of Teesside and the European Social Fund.
The 8 Adult Literacy programmes were designed to encourage residents of the CED areas to sign up for a support pack and a tutorial, that would help them to make the most of their potential.
It was delivered via the ntl community cable channel in Teesside, and on VHS cassette to the community centres in the area.

Written and Presented by Graeme Aldous, in conjunction with Educational Advisors Chris Nussey and Marie McKenna, the programmes aimed to combine elements of soap opera, with bright animated graphics and popular humour. The 'Go Team' - a 'repertory company' of 5 professional and student actors - took a number of roles to illustrate (and solve) problems encountered by those who may be held back by lack of learning skills. Topics ranged from simple Alphabetical Order to Form Filling and Writing Reports.

The Go Team

Musical items were written by Andy Dickinson and Ergo Phizmiz, and featured Ergo's character Johnny Domino - the World's Worst Club Singer. In each programme, Johnny illustrated a spelling tip in a song in which the appropriate words appeared on the screen, karaoke-style.

Ergo also wrote a number of comedy sketches loosely based on the programme topics, and featuring Terry Betts as John Whetlips - a character for whom the whole world is a puzzle.

John Whetlips encounters The Punchkins (John-Paul Bone), as J.R.Hartley meets the Wizard Of Oz in 'Yellow Brick Pages'.
